The Academy of Leonardo's Apprentice is a 501(c)(3) that puts real engineering, science, and design work in the hands of high school students who would otherwise never get near it. Students never pay, and cost is never a barrier. Our programs are funded by the professionals and organizations we train.

We partner with San Gabriel Valley high schools to run project-based programs in science, engineering, and the arts. Students design, build, and test real work with practicing engineers, scientists, and artists. We train the teachers who carry the programs forward between our visits, and we run summer and semester-long programs at no cost to any student.
In 1993, Peter Romero persuaded AOL to build the Electronic Schoolhouse and launched Space Island, connecting his students with a private school in New Rochelle, New York, and a public school in Sitka, Alaska. It was the first long-distance online educational program of its kind. By 1996, it had reached 2.3 million students and teachers in 40 nations, and that year it was the U.S. Congress that placed the Space Island program into the Library of Congress as a historical event, being the first long-distance online educational program ever launched, alongside recognition from the State of California and JPL/NASA.
Every online course offered today descends from work like that. Mr. Romero was there first.
He holds an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership with a focus on instructional design and a B.S. in Information Technology, along with California credentials in Computer Programming and System Design and in Career Technical Education for Media Arts and Technology. Across four decades, including twenty-five years at Don Bosco Technical Institute, he has built project-based programs on one conviction: curiosity creates everything.
He founded The Academy of Leonardo's Apprentice in 2018 to bring that work to students who are least likely to be handed the opportunity. The Academy partners with San Gabriel Valley high schools to put artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality, and hands-on engineering in front of teenagers, at no cost to any student.
